Breadcrumbs on business websites: how to improve navigation, SEO and visitor trust
Published on 02/08/2026

Breadcrumbs are the small navigation trail below your header: Home › Services › Web design. They look like a minor detail, but on business websites they do three jobs: orient visitors, reduce bounce rate and strengthen technical SEO.

If you already optimised your navigation menu and footer, breadcrumbs complete the navigation triangle: the menu picks a destination, breadcrumbs show where you are, and the footer offers backup links.

What are breadcrumbs and why do they matter?

A breadcrumb shows where the current page sits in your site hierarchy. A visitor landing from Google on a blog post can jump back to the category or homepage in one click — without the browser back button or hunting through the menu.

  • Less frustration: users do not feel lost on sites with many sections.
  • More pages per session: easier to explore related services or more blog content.
  • More trust: signals order and professionalism, especially in B2B and services.

Types of breadcrumbs (and which to use)

TypeExampleWhen to use
Hierarchy-basedHome › Blog › ArticleDefault choice for corporate sites and blogs
Attribute-basedHome › Shop › Shoes › Size 42E-commerce with filters and nested categories
History-basedPrevious page › Current pageRarely recommended: confusing and weak for SEO

For most business websites, a hierarchy-based breadcrumb that mirrors the real site structure is enough — not the exact click path the user took.

SEO benefits: clear structure for Google

Google uses breadcrumbs to understand how your URLs relate. With BreadcrumbList Schema.org markup, you may also earn breadcrumb trails in search results below the title — extra space and context that can lift CTR.

Schema.org BreadcrumbList markup for Google rich results
  • Strengthens internal linking to categories and the homepage.
  • Helps Google classify deep pages (services, case studies, posts).
  • Complements your homepage and conversion-focused landing pages.

How to design breadcrumbs that convert

  1. Consistent placement: below the header, above the H1, on all internal pages.
  2. Clear separator: › or / with good contrast; avoid ambiguous icons.
  3. Short labels: match menu names (ideally 3–4 levels max).
  4. Link every level except the current page.
  5. Visible on mobile: single line with horizontal scroll if needed — do not hide them.

Pair breadcrumbs with well-placed CTAs: oriented users are more likely to click “Get a quote” or “Contact us”.

Common mistakes on business websites

  • Breadcrumbs that do not match real URLs (e.g. linking to /services when the path is /en/services).
  • Linking the current page — creates confusion and redundant links.
  • Skipping the homepage — it should always be the first item.
  • Duplicating the full menu — breadcrumbs summarise hierarchy, they do not replace navigation.
  • No Schema markup — you miss free rich-result opportunities.

FAQ

Are breadcrumbs mandatory?

Not legally, but on sites with more than 10–15 pages they are strong UX and SEO practice. Google recommends them in structured data documentation.

Should I show them on the homepage?

No. Only on internal pages where hierarchy exists.

Do they ruin a minimal design?

They can stay subtle: small type, secondary colour. The orientation benefit outweighs the visual cost when the hero is well designed.

Do WordPress, PrestaShop or Laravel include them?

Many themes and CMS platforms include them by default, but always verify labels, links and Schema. On custom builds we implement them from the wireframe so they fit the site architecture.

Next step

Breadcrumbs do not replace a solid menu or a clear homepage, but they make every deep page more useful for visitors and for Google. If you are rethinking site navigation, our web design for businesses service covers structure, breadcrumbs and technical markup from the first wireframe.
